On-Site (Rapid) Testing: Is It Really Cost-Effective?

On-site testing methods such as saliva screening kits and urine tests are often used in the Family Justice sector because they appear quick and cost-effective.

This webinar examines why these approaches can fail to deliver reliable evidence, potentially increasing costs, delaying proceedings and affecting decision-making. Drawing on forensic science and case experience, the session explores detection windows, false positives and negatives, lack of confirmatory testing and risks of tampering. It also explains when laboratory-based testing and expert interpretation are necessary in safeguarding and court-led cases.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand how saliva screening tests and urine testing works, and the scientific limitations associated with each method.
  • Recognise the common causes of inaccurate, inconclusive, or misleading on-site screening results.
  • Assess how initial low-cost screening can lead to increased downstream costs through repeat testing, dispute, and delay.
  • Identify risks to evidential integrity within Family Court and safeguarding proceedings.

Who is this course for?

This webinar invites social workers and solicitors to critically assess the use of on-site testing, avoid false reassurance or unnecessary escalation, and commission testing that withstands scrutiny, helping to reduce delay, manage costs and protect evidential integrity.
