Over the past 15 years, UK case law has made it clear that hair strand testing is expert opinion evidence — results must always be fully explained within the wider context of a case. Courts have repeatedly stressed that:
- HST results should not be viewed in isolation or treated as conclusive.
- Findings must be clearly described, reported in full (not just above cut-offs), and explained in a way the court can understand.
- Variables such as hair colour, treatment, environment, and testing processes can all influence results.
- Experts have a duty to present evidence faithfully, helping courts understand both the value and the limitations of HST.
Despite this, many providers still issue simplified reports that risk misinterpretation.
How FTS is different
FTS never applies arbitrary cut-off levels or issues misleading “positive/negative” certificates. Instead, we:
- Report all results in full.
- Take a detailed forensic history to support informed interpretation.
- Provide expert commentary to explain what findings mean in context.
- Offer expert witnesses and support with court instructions.
