Investigation launched into dangers of ‘legal highs’ after Manchester sees a huge rise in use

Health chiefs have launched a major investigation into the scale and dangers of soaring ‘legal high’ use in Manchester.

Public health officials at the town hall have commissioned an in-depth piece of research into ‘new psychoactive substances’ amid growing concerns about their effects.

Academics at Manchester Metropolitan University will try to work out just how many people in the city are actually using the drugs – and what services are needed to cope with the resulting health problems.

The M.E.N. has reported previously on the terrifying effects of many readily-available legal highs .

Users have reported throwing up blood or collapsing as common-place, with the drug ‘Spice’ particularly prevalent – especially among rough sleepers.
